STEP IN AND STEP UP IS A NEW CAREER CHANGE PROGRAMME IN THE SOUTH WEST AIMED AT GETTING PROFESSIONALS FROM OUTSIDE CONSTRUCTION INTO ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING INDUSTRIES IN THE UK.

Developed in response to a growing construction skills need both nationally and in the South West, Step In and Step Up will see career-changers from a whole range of sectors hosted by construction companies for twelve months. During this time, they’ll undergo an intensive programme of training and work placements, gaining experience and qualifications in everything from project management and estimating to quantity surveying and site safety.

Step In and Step Up will give its participants the grounding needed to enter the construction industry, allowing them to bring their existing insight and professional knowledge to the sector, and helping to close the regional skills gap.

With funding from the CITB, led by Kier and in partnership with Midas, ISG, the Plymouth Construction Training Group and South Devon College.

Research by the Construction Skills Network has shown that construction in the South West will grow more in the next ten years than in any other part of England, and this rapid expansion means it could be the perfect place for your experience and skills.

Participants on the Step In and Step Up scheme will undergo an intensive 12-month programme of work placements and training, all designed to get you ready to join the construction workforce.

Hosted by one of our partners—construction companies with strong local and regional standing—you’ll rotate through a variety of work placements, including (but not limited to) site management, quantity surveying, buying, and preparatory works.

In addition, you’ll undergo a comprehensive range of training. With a short ‘trade basics’ programme to give you some fundamental construction know-how, your training programme will be tailored to meet your individual needs and could include a Level 3 CMI Management Diploma, a Project Management course, as well as extensive site safety certification (and English, Maths and IT training if required).

Upon completion of the programme, you’ll have industry insight and nous which, combined with your existing professional experience, will make you a huge asset to the businesses thriving in this increasingly dynamic sector.

PROGRAMME STRANDS

The programme has three different strands, so whether you’re considering a career change because of limited progression in your current role, because you want to try something new or just because of the vast benefits that working in construction provides, you can be sure there’s a way of engaging that suits your needs:

SPONSORED

Similar in structure to a traditional graduate scheme, you’ll become a full-time employee of your host business, undergoing the most extensive work placement programme of the three pathways. Suitable if you’re ready to fully commit to your career change.

Starting salaries will be from £21k and could be higher subject to background and experience.

PART-TIME

This pathway is designed to allow you to gain knowledge of construction, complete training and raise your profile, all while remaining in your existing job. Far more flexible than the sponsored strand, you’ll complete training via evening, weekend or distance learning. Work placements will be completed on annual leave (or, if part-time, on days off). Suitable if the sponsored strand seems too great a commitment at this stage.

UNEMPLOYED

Even more flexible than the part-time strand, this pathway is for you if you’re not currently in the workplace. Whether you’ve recently been made redundant, or taken a few years out of work for children, we want you to bring your expertise and drive to construction. The delivery of both training and work placements will be sensitive to any benefit restrictions that apply.
